Furniture building has been a little slow. Between golf and 10 cubic yards of compost for my yard I have been a little busy.
The entry cabinet is making progress though. It is made out of scrap Pecan wood left over from the dining room table I made. I did buy the Pecan slab for the top and some maple veneer.
No... I am not a longhorn supporter !! These are the legs for the cabinet...
Most of the parts are
made and I clamped it together a few days ago to see how it looks in in the entryway... it's just the frame at this point.
There will be carved doors and drawer front (nothing elaborate, since it is my first attempt at carving) on the front of the cabinet. The sides are the tough part... they have to have the same curved shape as the legs do. So I had to learn how to make plywood in that shape.
So I bought some Maple veneer and a large plastic bag with a valve on it that uses a wine pump like I have in my wine drawer. Simple. It seems to be... I will know in the morning when I take it out of the bag.
The wood in the bag is 30 inches long... hard to tell in the photo.
I got this technique from a company that teaches kids how to make their own skateboards. It is simple and cheap. I suspect I will be making custom skateboards in the future...
To get the curved shape I got a chunk of styrofoam from a friend that moved and also got some new furniture. She thought I was being nice by taking her trash away... but, one lady's trash is another man's treasure... I hope. I cut the styrofoam to roughly the correct shape and then sanded it down to the to the final shape. The Maple veneer has plastic netting over it to help create channels to vacuum all of the air out. The vacuum in the bag puts even pressure on the layers of maple veneer that are glued together.
Can you tell I am excited... I love learning. The bar for excitement when you are retired... is pretty low...
