The next project is underway. The cabinets on both sides of the fireplace.
The old cabinets are coming out and new ones are being built. A mantel will be added also.
The new cabinets will be mostly enclosed with four 16 inch square lit boxes across the top. They will be dark gray and that is a little scary. The same color as the trim around the new front door. To help visualize I bought three 4x8 sheets of flat cardboard ($3 each) from Mission Container on Laredo Street. They are nice people. The cardboard would be fun for a winter project with kids.
Anyhow I sprayed the cardboard with the dark gray paint and it comes out black because of the brown cardboard. Then I made a couple of boxes and painted them two different colors of yellow... eventually the boxes will be yellow and now I think much lighter yellow than my test. I then installed the LED strips of lights in the left boxes. The right boxes are just pieces of cardboard for effect.
I want to paint the beams in the ceiling the same color as the cabinet... but that is still up for discussion.
I managed to put a knickknack in the left box to check the size.
I even got some old, fat, bald headed guy to hold up some semblance of the free floating mantel.
I picked up some of the wood today and it is sitting out in the hot garage ready for me to get started milling it in to shape... but I decided to do this post instead... much cooler in here.... Tomorrow I start.
I bought 6/4 rough Poplar... 1 1/2 inches thick right now. I will mill it flat and uniform thickness and width next. After that I will make it into the moldings for the cabinets.
Once I get a good start building the cabinets I will tear out the old ones... it is always interesting to see what is behind a built in cabinet...
I would like to thank Mimi for allowing me to store my leftover walnut, pecan, alder, padauk and other assorted leftover expensive pieces of wood... in the middle of her parking spot. She carefully parks her car in the garage and straddles that wood every night. I just can't bear to throw away a beautiful piece of wood. I have so many projects in my head and I look at that wood and dream of things to build with it. So that wood laying on the floor is actually furniture that is stored very conveniently at this time. I love woodworking and the heat really isn't so bad...

You have a vision! You're visions so far have been very good. Go with the vision. I like how you check it out first.
I agree with Pam
