Many months after sitting on the couch and sketching a drawing of a new entertainment center... it is done. I had to learn how to steam bend wood and make a curved solid wood door. In the end I am almost happy with it. The top is Leopard wood the other dark wood is Alder (I like working with alder), and the shelves are high grade plywood edged in a home-made Alder molding.
The curved door is made out of 16 pieces of Alder, each about an inch wide and 30 inches long. To make it curved there is a 1.5 to 3.0 degree angle on the joining edges. After gluing the edges together I sculpted and then sanded it to shape. For me it was somewhat of a guess, for someone else it could be precisely made. The door was the most interesting part of the project.
Now the mistake. Have you ever heard the phrase measure twice cut once? Well, I have... so I measure and I measure and I measure. I had a space 49.5 inches wide to insert this corner unit... so I built it 48 inches wide... kinda...
uggghhh.... %*#@%^**+$#... I slide the finished unit in... and oops... it is too wide. How could that be?? The top is 48 inches wide... ... ... and the bottom is... ... 50.25 inches wide... ugh... I suddenly have red ears... not happy. So I removed the baseboard molding... now it is a measly quarter of an inch too wide...
So I unscrew and tap off the left leg, as it is really only there for aesthetic reasons... and you can't see it in the corner anyway... So it fits... But, I don't like making mistakes.
I just couldn't handle the straight legs I designed initially, so I flared them out at the bottom. They are about a half inch wide at the top and about an inch and a half wide at the bottom... and too wide...
The corner unit may become a wall unit, over where the a furniture store designer said it should be... then it would have two legs again.
Now that I am done with this project I think I will knock down two walls in the kitchen and raise the ceiling... rip out all of the kitchen cabinets... build and install all new kitchen cabinets... put in all new appliances... put in new floors everywhere... new energy efficient windows everywhere... new granite counter tops... close in the small covered patio and add a breakfast booth in it's place.... mmmmm.....????

its beautiful dad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want one !!
And I can't wait to see the re-do either - we are actually in the first stages of some changes as well (first stages being - "talking about") <-: and we do not have the talent to do it ourselves (nor the patience)
Scott's reaction: "WOOOOOOOOOW!" The stand is beautiful, dad. You have a real talent. I love it!
I can't wait to see in progress pictures of the kitchen...should be a fun ride!
If any of your housemates need a place to stay when they freak out about their house being torn up, the Lpod house is open. :)
(speaking from my very, very, very minor window experience this summer - I wanted to go crazy and it was less than a weeek!! If momma and I are anything alike, which...weellllll, yeah...)
Ahhh... well.... geeezz... you might have a good idea there.
