A Better Photo of Totally Awesome Beach

Totally Awesome Beach is our name for this beach,it is in the main channel at Buoy 68 (No mile markers at Lake Powell... Buoys markers). They start numbering the buoys at the dam and go up-lake. If you have Google Earth you can use these coordinates to find the beach...

37 15 13.9N 110 52 04.10W

There are some amazing photos to click on in Google Earth.

The rock on the left is usually an island, but is the lake is low in this photo (2003) ... it got lower... down to 31% full... today it is about 62% full.

This is where Billy shocked us by asking permission to marry Melissa! I didn't know what to say. The next day I overheard Billy tell his Dad, on a cell phone in the middle of the lake... "No Dad he didn't throw me in the deepest lake I have ever seen"... and... actually the thought had not even crossed my mind.

The houseboat in this photo is Summer Paradise, she is 73ft long, 4 bedrooms, 2 baths and nicer than our house. We were one of 19 owners on the boat for 5 years. There aren't many people to fix a houseboat in the middle of the desert... so we are back to renting now... if you are renting you can get a mechanic out to fix your water heater... anywhere on the lake (last year they came 45 miles on a Saturday afternoon... a couple of hours after I called them!).

About 20 ft further away from where the boat is beached the water in the main channel is about 350-400 ft deep (I think). There is a rock on the lake side of the island that looks like a Baylor Bear with a paw up... even Aggies and Longhorns think it looks like a Baylor Bear. So that is the name of that huge rock... we love finding shapes in the rocks... and giving them names. Guests get to name un-named beaches. Some beach names we have made:
  • Totally Awesome
  • Convenience Beach...
  • Pretty Crummy Beach
  • Margarita Beach (everyone must have one of those!)
  • Butt Crack Beach... really... it was a guests turn to name the beach... very accurate name!
  • Dramamine Beach
  • Naked Neighbor Beach... yeah... everyone liked this one... Martha gave me binoculars... I didn't need them! ... but I gave them a try anyway... :-)
  • Duck Quack Cul-de-sac
  • Sweetheart Beach... later renamed by the guys... Big Booby Beach... for the rocks... really!
  • Hurricane Beach... it was a rainy night
  • Lizard Beach
  • Sand Dune Beach... amazing dunes
  • 4 Chair Beach... we were being a little rude and possessive of our beach that day...
  • I have forgotten more than I have named
I thinking about creating a new blog called "The Powell Wowell" to chronicle our many trips to Lake Powell... there are many legends (in my own mind) and adventures... stay tuned... does anyone know how much it cost to turn a blog into a DVD ... or permanent digital storage?? The family might like that.

I think I better warm up the boat... I feel a Lake Powell trip coming on...

Helloooooooooooooooooooo. How in the world could you forget Shipwreck Beach? I mean, we didn't stay there, heck, we didn't even all go there...but it was a big one.

O my gosh. so where are all the people? I'm glad it's not crowded. Maybe you shouldn't be broadcasting all the info. I want to go. You've convinced me.

Is Shipwreck Beach the title photo I just put in? I thought that was Lizard Beach?

Pam - there are times we go and don't see another boat for a couple of days. The lake has more shoreline than the entire west coast of the USA. 2000 miles of shoreline. The farther you get from the marinas the less people.

Our personal window for going is usually Sept 15 to Oct 15... and May - before school lets out. Utah has a Mormon holiday in the fall and it sometimes gets crowded that weekend, near the marinas... other than that it is best when kids are in school.

Our last trip, we rented a 59ft houseboat, 4 bedroom, 1 and a half bath... (2 bedrooms are kinda shared space) We have rented a 54 footer numerous times also. Last years bill was $6000 for a week. That included fuel and liability insurance.

Add to that cost:

* 2214 miles round trip driving expense

* Food for the group.

* Cell phone bill goes up unless you have Verizon... roaming.

* Cost of renting a dingy or boat... depending on the number of people going. Our biggest group was 11 people, we had the kids rent a 19ft boat and pay for it themselves... that way they could get off on their own and not worry too much about the boat (liability insurance on it)

*one time we had 4 couples and the guests rented the "Rubber Ducky" a rubber boat with a small motor... people sometimes need there space.

*Weight in your car becomes an issue, since we take all our food with us. A case of water per person minimum... case of beer per person...etc.

*Guests have flown into Phoenix and Albuquerque...rented cars and driven... they stop for their case of water and beer.

*The marinas have conveinence stores with most essentials... a little pricey...but it is a remote place and it is deserved.

Just seeing your comment dad. Shipwreck beach was where you and Scott lost both engines and gently glided the big boat into the beach. Mom and I were "hanging" at the marina.
