From Russia and PopPop... with Love

I built Hank a train table for his birthday... but I was late in getting it done...  Normal retired person operation.

I bought 3 sheets of Baltic Birch...1/2" ... Russian Baltic Birch.  It comes in 5'x5' sheets instead of 4'x8' normal sheets.  It is better than regular plywood and is usually used to make better drawers.  The top layer of the plywood is thicker and is less likely to splinter off when cutting it.  I like Baltic Birch.  Also, there are no voids in the plywood like normal... on top of that Birch is pretty.

It is a big table, 3'x4'.  Just big enough for his train set.  The table is almost completely plywood.  I used a few left over pieces of 1x6 pine.  The finish is water based polyurethane which is very clear.  Clear coat just seemed more like Hank... rough and tough... and no frills.

I built the table and drawers strong enough for him to dance on the top of the table or in the drawers... hopefully...  you never know with that boy.

I put shelves on the side for his toy cars... that is the first thing he figured out.  I loved watching him figure that out.

I put a huge drawer in each end to store... whatever.  They are big deep drawers 2'x2' and 1' deep.  I put multiple, removable dividers in the drawers to keep things somewhat organized.

This side has a taller shelf for books... or more cars...

HaHa... I am sure he will invite you to play. But be warned, it is coffee table height... I hope your back is in good shape.
